Where looking good is understood!

JANUARY NEWSLETTER

Happy 2006 to all our friends!

We would like to wish you the best of health this year. This month, we would like to give you a few tips about taking care of your skin so you can look as good as you feel.

It is important to treat your facial skin with great care. The skin on your face is more sensitive than the skin on other parts of your body and it is exposed to harsh environmental elements. It is the first thing people notice when they look at you. These tips will help you to look your best.

Skin Care 101-we will start with some recommendations on how to wash your face!

The first thing you need to do is to wash your hands. You need to do this first – or all the bacteria and dirt from your hands will end up on your face. Follow this by gently wetting your face with warm water (not HOT).  If the water is too hot, you can injure the skin and break down the protective outer layer.

We bet a lot of you use bar soap to wash your face. Most bar soaps are somewhat drying. The pH of the skin is usually around 5 (somewhat acidic), and many bar soaps can be very alkaline. Soaps with a high pH will not only dry your skin but also remove the outer protective layer.  We recommend using a gentle liquid cleanser to wash your face.

There are many formulations of facial cleansers. Gel cleansers are usually oil-free and are good for normal skin. Foaming cleansers usually lather and are great for oily skin. Look for a water-soluble cleanser and stay away from products containing alcohol or other irritating agents. There are many over-the counter products that work well, including Neutrogena, Cetaphil, and many others. There are several cosmeceutical cleansers that also work well.

Spread about a nickel-sized dollop of cleanser between your damp hands, and use your fingertips to massage it into the skin. Start at the forehead and work down the nose to your cheeks and chin.  Don’t rub too hard. You should massage the area for 30-45 seconds to help remove all the debris off your face.  Be sure to cover all areas, including the eyebrows. We prefer that individuals use their fingertips to cleanse their face. If you have to use a washcloth, be sure not to rub too hard or you will irritate the skin. Wash the cleanser off by splashing cool water over your face. It actually takes three times longer to rinse your face than to wash it. You don’t want to leave any cleanser residue on the skin, as it may promote drying and irritation resulting in damage to the protective function of the skin.

For individuals with dry skin, dab your face with a towel and put moisturizer on before the skin is dry (the dampness of the skin helps to absorb the moisturizer).  If your skin is oily, dry your face completely. A moisturizer shouldn’t be necessary for oily skin unless your skin shows signs of dryness in which case the moisturizer should only be applied to the areas that are dry. Simple things like washing your face the right way will help you be healthier this year.

Now is a great time to start some new habits! We recommend that you drink 6 glasses of water each day to keep the skin hydrated.  Be sure to wear sunscreen (yes, even in the winter) to keep your skin from prematurely aging.
